History

Throughout
history it has been center of attraction of the numerous
cultures that have happened through the Peninsula. From the
Paleolítico they date the first slumses, stated by the rest
found in Cau d'En Borràs. The íberos vestiges of Oropesa the
Vella and Romans located in the zone, confirm the strong
presence of these cultures in the Mediterranean shore.
During the
Middle Ages, Oropesa del Mar belonged to the military men of
"Hospitalarios" and later Jaime I, conquering the castle in
1233. The village was under term from different
governers, later to be in the hands of "Jofré de Thous" who
fought the invasions of numerious occasions from the
"berberiscos" pirates- The most famous being tht of
Barbarroja. Pedro I of Antequera commanded to
construct teh costal defense Tower because of these, which
was later reformed by Felipe II. The tower, unique to
the military monumental style and still today can be seen in
a perfect state.
During the
Napoleanic invasion, Oropesa underwent invasion from the
troops of Martial "Suchet" who fought with the heroic
resistance of the town. |
